ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team dropped its home opener, 6-1, to Augsburg University [2-1 overall] Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 0-2 on the season.
Taking on the first half, UNW and AU contested intensely, as the score remained 0-0 up until the 30:00 mark when
Megan Larsen (Appleton, Wis./Appleton East) buried the Eagles first goal to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead.
Anna Martinson (Apple Valley, Minn./Homeschool) helped out in the action, as the senior defender tabbed the assist.
At the 15:30 window, the Auggies netted their first goal to lift the score 1-1. Though the Eagles continued to put forth their best efforts, firing off five shot [3 SOG] on the period, it was Augsburg who led at the intermission break, 3-1.
As the second period took off, AU's offensive force became too much for the home team. Augsburg managed to tap in three goals on the half to secure a 6-1 win on the night's competition.
Capping off the contest, Northwestern totaled nine shots [6 SOG], which came up shy to Augsburg's 29 shots [15 SOG].
The game leaders on the evening battle were Larsen [1S / 1SOG, 1G] and Martinson [2S / 1 SOG / 1A]. Goalkeeper
Samantha Dewey (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) put together a strong performance, as she recorded an impressive nine saves on the match.
