ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team was defeated by Bethel University [2-1-0 overall], 1-0, in Thursday evenings hard-fought contest at Reynolds Field. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 0-3-0 on the season.
Opening up the first half, both teams started out on an aggressive foot. The Royals managed to find the net first, as they knocked one in ten minutes into the period to boost a 1-0 lead. UNW stayed strong, as goalkeeper
Samantha Dewey (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) and defender
Dana Lehtinen (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) guarded the box with solid efforts.
Though BU held a 1-0 advantage at the intermission break, the Eagles were able to fire off three shots [2 SOG] on the half.
Taking on the second period, Northwestern and Bethel battled it out until the very end. With both teams unable to score on the half, the visiting Royals secured the 1-0 win over the Eagles.
Capping off the contest, UNW totaled nine shots [6 SOG], which fell short to BU's 28 shots [14 SOG].
The game leaders on the evening match were
Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) [5S / 3 SOG],
Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Homeschool) [3S / 2 SOG], and
Anna Martinson (Apple Valley, Minn./Homeschool) [1S / 1 SOG]. On the defensive end, Dewey put together an outstanding presentation, as she recorded 13 saves on the night's competition.
