ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team [4-5-1, 4-0-1 UMAC] battled the College of St. Scholastica [4-4-2, 3-1-1 UMAC] in its homecoming contest Saturday at Reynolds Field. The Eagles won the hard-fought match, 2-1, over the visiting Saints.
Taking on the first half, UNW came out strong, as Junior
Maddie Leever (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny Christian) and Senior
Anna Hitterdal (St. Louis Park, Minn./Southwest Christian) knocked in a goal a piece to give Northwestern a 2-0 lead over St. Scholastica. Freshman
Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) helped out in the action, as she claimed the assist off of Hitterdal's goal.
At the 16-minute mark, CSS made it interesting as they netted their first to lift the score 2-1, still in the home team's favor.
By the intermission break, the Eagles maintained the lead, 2-1, and tallied an impressive eight shots [4 SOG].
The second half was well contested, as both teams exchanged shots and defensive efforts. As the 90-minute battle came to a close, the Eagles soared to victory, clinching a 2-1 homecoming win.
On the contest, UNW totaled 15 shots [9 SOG], as CSS recorded 21 shots [16 SOG].
Northwestern's game leaders on the evening competition were Hitterdal [3S / 3 SOG / 1G], Leever [1S / 1 SOG / 1G], and Welch [2S/ 2 SOG / 1A].
Samantha Dewey (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) put together an outstanding performance, as the junior goalkeeper caught 13 saves on the game.
