Volleyball Caps Off Perfect Weekend With Pair of Sweeps

ST. PAUL – The No. 4 University of Northwestern volleyball team swept Concordia Moorhead and Buena Vista Saturday inside the Ericksen Center to cap off a perfect weekend at the Kathryne Pals Legacy Invitational.

UNW 3, Concordia 0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-15)
The Eagles cruised to the sweep of the visiting Cobbers thanks in big part to a season-high .387 hitting percentage. The Eagles hit an impressive .552 in set two to pick up a dominant victory. Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) and Mariah Halvorsen (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) both hit .300-plus en route to tallying double-digit kill totals, as Peterson slammed 14 kills and Halvorsen 12. Peterson also led the Eagles with her 11 digs to secure a double-double.

Leesa Malone (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) made her presence felt at the net, posting four blocks, while Anna Gasch (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) and Kayla Tanner (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) added three each. Malone and Kaelyn Kilbo (Delano, Minn./Delano) recorded 19 and 18 assists, respectively.

UNW 3, BVU 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-22)
The Eagles were able to compile a hitting percentage better than .300 for the second-straight match to defeat a strong BVU squad. Peterson was just too much for the Beavers, as the senior racked up 22 kills in just three sets, while also adding 10 digs. Jackie Doering (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) led the Eagles in digs with her 17, while Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian), Mariah Halvorsen (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and Anna Gasch (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) all recorded two each. Abby Neuberger (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) served up a trio of aces to help UNW hold a 7-4 advantage in that department.

In addition to the team's success, Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) and Mariah Halvorsen (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) were All-Tournament selections with Peterson taking home Tournament MVP honors.

The Eagles will make the short trip to Minneapolis next weekend to compete at the highly-competitive Augsburg Tournament.  Fans can stay up-to-date on the volleyball season by following @unwvb on Twitter and by visiting www.unweagles.com.
