SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern Eagles fell twice to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets. They lost in game one 10-4 and game two 6-5.
It was a historic day for UNW senior Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian), who broke Northwestern's all-time career hits mark with his three-hit day. The Clive, Iowa, native finishes his career with 201 career rips, one better than Zack Markwith's previous record.
Game One
The Eagles scored a run in the top of the first inning after Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) reached base. Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) scored on the play after his 199th career hit. The Yellowjackets plated two in the bottom of the frame and then added two more in the bottom of the second. Nick Pilz (Stacy, Minn./North Branch) hit a double to lead off the top of the second, but was left stranded.
The next Eagles hit was by Cedric Cavazos (Chicago, Ill./Buffalo Grove) in the top of the sixth with the score still 4-1. In the top of the seventh, the Eagles added a second run. David Beer (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) led off with a walk and Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) scored him on an infield hit.
Superior added four runs in the bottom of the frame before adding two more in the bottom of the eighth. Between those two frames, the Eagles added two runs when David Beer (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) singled home Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) and then Braxton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) singled Beer home.
Micah Williams (Gulfport, Miss. /Christian Collegiate Academy) gave up five earned runs over six-and-two-third innings. He stuck out eight and then was relieved by Henry Waage (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) who gave up two runs in an inning of work. Daniel Stratton (Lucerne Valley, Calif. /Lucerne Valley) got the last out of the eighth inning on one pitch.
Game Two
Braxton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) led off with a double, but was left stranded. Superior scored one in the bottom of the frame, but the Eagles rallied in the top of the third. Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) walked and then Brett Rienhart homered to make the score 2-1. Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) followed with a base hit and then Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) hit the Eagles second homer of the inning to make it 4-1.
Superior scored two times in the bottom of the third to make it 4-3. The Eagles got one of those back after Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) singled home Cedric Cavazos (Chicago, Ill./Buffalo Grove). Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) added hit number 200 in the top of the sixth inning which tied him with Zach Markwith for the Eagles career hits record.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Yellowjackets tied the game at five thanks to a two-out double. In the top of the ninth, Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) got hit number 201 to become the all-time leader in career hits. In the bottom of the ninth, the Yellowjackets loaded the bases with two outs before they stole home to win the game.
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) gave up five runs over eight innings of work and then Jake Franzen got the loss after giving up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
The Eagles finish the season with a record of 15-25 and were 5-11 in UMAC play. With the sweep, the Yellowjackets qualified for the UMAC playoffs.
