ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team closed its home slate with a pair of matches Monday at the Johnson Tennis Courts. The Eagles picked up a pair of sweeps over UW-River Falls and Bethany Lutheran College.
With UNW's win over BLC, the Eagles are the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season co-champions with the College of St. Scholastica. Both teams finished the conference slate with a 9-1 mark.
UNW 9, UWRF 0
The Eagles rolled over the visiting Falcons, as UNW build an early advantage sweeping doubles play. At No. 2 doubles, Rachel Lukkarilla and
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) didn't lose a game en route to an 8-0 win.
Emily Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and Gracie Lebrun matched their teammates at No. 3 doubles, earning an 8-0 victory.
Lukkarilla shined in singles play as well, as the freshman won in straight sets at No. 5 singles.
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) moved to 26-0 with her triumph at No. 1 singles.
UNW 9, BLC 0
The Eagles capped off their impressive conference season with a commanding win over BLC under the lights. Northwestern had no trouble in doubles play, as all three duos cruised to victories to establish a 3-0 advantage out of the gates for the Eagles.
In singles play,
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen), Rachel Lukkarilla and Gracie Lebrun all took home straight set wins to lead the charge.
UNW will be the No. 2 seed heading into next weekend's conference tournament at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Eagles will the second seed behind St. Scholastica, as the Saints had a larger margin of victory in the first meeting this season between the teams.
