ST. PAUL, MINN. - In Friday's home doubleheader, the University of Northwestern Eagles softball team swept the University of Wisconsin-Superior in two high-energy contests. UNW won game one with a final score of 5-3 and then went on to notch a 4-3 victory in game two. With the wins, the purple and gold improve to 12-16 on the season and 8-2 in conference play.
GAME ONE
UW-Superior jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Northwestern then immediately bounced back after
Megan Threlkeld (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) led off with a double, as
Ann Lokke (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) singled her home to make it a 1-1 tie game.
At the bottom of the third, Lokke brought home Threlkeld and
Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) to boost a 3-1 lead in the Eagles favor. Wrapping up the fourth frame,
Kaylee Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) single scored during M. Forcier's at bat, stretching the home teams lead to 4-1.
By the close of the fifth inning, UNW added another run to gain a 5-1 advantage, but the visiting team wasn't done yet. In the top of the seventh, UW-Superior scored two final runs, but it was the purple and gold who secured the 5-3 victory.
GAME TWO
On the first inning, the Eagles added the first tally to the scoreboard [1-0] at the bottom of the first after
Jennifer Ankrom (New Hampton, Iowa/New Hampton) singled home
Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins). It wasn't until the top of the sixth that the Yellowjackets would tie up the game 1-1.
By the seven, no team would score again, forcing the contest into extra innings with the scoreboard locked at 1-1.
At the top of the eighth, UWS scored two runs, boosting a 3-1 lead over UNW. With bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the eighth,
Jennifer Ankrom (New Hampton, Iowa/New Hampton) popped up a ball to the catcher, but the Yellowjackets didn't cover home plate, allowing the Forcier sisters to score a run apiece due to the result of the play. With the game all tied up [3-3] and two tallied outs,
Megan Threlkeld (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) scored on the next at bat off of a wild pitch, sealing a walk-off 4-3 victory for the Eagles.
