UNW Outlasts Clarke in Overtime Thriller

DUBUQUE, IOWA. – The University of Northwestern men's lacrosse team clinched an 11-10 overtime win by defeating Clarke University [0-7 overall] Saturday afternoon in Dubuque, Iowa. With the win, the Eagles improve to 4-4 on the season.

After CU took a 2-0 advantage at the close of the first 15:00 frame, UNW used a strong offensive attack in the second period to net five goals, heading into intermission with a 5-4 lead over the home team.

Throughout the third quarter, Northwestern knocked in one lone goal as Clarke tapped in two to make it a 6-6 tied game. The fourth set was met by high intensity and forceful action, as both teams went on to bury four goals apiece to push the contest into overtime with the score at 10-10.

Both teams struggled to find the back of the net during the first two minutes into the OT stretch. With the Eagles on a two-man down, Eric McCartan (Roseville, Minn./Roseville) came up big as he sank the team's game-winning goal to secure the 11-10 sudden victory over the home team.

Noah Vander Kooi (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) and McCartan also had strong showings on the mid-day contest, as they each tapped in two goals apiece, while a trio of Eagles added one. Vander Kooi also noted three assists and three ground balls, while McCartan contributed one caused turnover, respectively.

On the defensive end, Goalkeeper Zach Shockencey (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) totaled an impressive 16 saves on the day's competition.
