GEORGETOWN, TEXAS – The University of Northwestern men's lacrosse team [0-3 overall] fell short in a challenging road contest to Southwestern University [5-3 overall] Tuesday evening. The Eagles dropped the game 7-29.
SU came out with an intensity that was tough to match, but UNW kept in the fight as they battled to an impressive 5-5 score in the first period.
The next 15:00 were a physical test for the Eagles, as the Pirates held the purple and gold to only one goal, while they netted 12 to take a 17-6 lead into the halftime break.
Throughout the final two frames of play, Southwestern tacked on 12 more goals, topping Northwestern's one, to claim the 29-7 victory on the night's competition.
Noah Vander Kooi (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) led the pack with three goals for UNW, while teammate
Gavin Welch (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) ended with two.
Brady Minich (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and
Keller Stephens (Lino Lakes, Minn./Mounds View ) also had strong showings on the evening, as they each concluded with a goal apiece.
On the defensive end, Goalkeeper
Zach Shockencey (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) put together an impressive performance, as the sophomore standout recorded a career-high 21 saves on the match.
As a collective group, Northwestern finished with a grand total of 16 shots [7 SOG], 30 ground balls, and went 13-27 on clears.
