DUBUQUE, IOWA. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team snatched a 10-7 road victory over Loras College Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Eagles advance to 2-1 on the season.
Waisting no time to get on the scoreboard,
Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi) knocked in the first goal of the game at the 28:53 mark to help the team boost an early 1-0 lead. The rest of the period became a back-and-forth battle as UNW went on to net six more goals, holding LC to five, to head into the locker room with a 7-6 advantage.
Composing a stellar second period of competition, the Eagles went on to outscore Loras 3-1, which gave Northwestern enough of a lead to finalize a 10-7 victory on the mid-day match.
Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Montomedi) had a strong showing on the game, as the sophomore midfielder led the squad with three goals, six shots, and three ground balls.
Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) and Shands also put forth solid performances, as Sherry finished the night with three goals and Shands with two. Sherry was also able to scoop four grounders, while Shands added eight and one assist.
Shining on the defensive end, Goalkeeper
Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) concluded the match with a career-high 12 saves for the purple and gold.
As a collective group, Northwestern concluded the contest with a grand total of 27 shots, 19 shots on goal, 43 ground balls, 13 draw controls, and went 10-24 on clears.
