Augsburg Spoils UNW Home Opener

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern softball team dropped both ends of a twinbill with Augsburg College (12-6) Thursday evening at Reynolds Field. The Eagles fell 8-1 in game one and 13-2 in the nightcap. Northwestern moves to 4-12 on the season.

Game One
The visiting Auggies scored twice in the opening frame and never looked back, using a five-run third to earn an 8-1 win.

The Eagles manufactured their run in the bottom of the first when Ellen Larkin (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) rounded the bases after drawing a walk early in the inning.

Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins), Kaylee Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) and Ciara Scheithauer (Rib Lake, Wis./Rib Lake) were responsible for UNW's three hits in the contest. Freshman Abbie Nelson (Holdrege, Neb./Holdrege) was tagged with the loss in the circle after the right-hander allowed eight runs on 11 hits in seven innings of work.

Game Two
Augsburg built a 5-0 lead in the top of the third, but UNW clawed away at the deficit with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning to put the score 5-2. The Auggies responded with two runs in the fifth and tacked on six more in the sixth to earn the run-rule victory.

Kaylee Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) doubled in sister Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) in the third for the Eagles' first run and Ellen Larkin (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) delivered an RBI groundout to plate Kaylee Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) to account for run No. 2.

Mindy Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) led the offensive attack, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Lauren Silbernick (Osakis, Minn./Osakis) suffered the loss, as the senior went the distance.

The Eagles will remain at home for a doubleheader with the University of Wisconsin-Stout Saturday. First pitch in game one is slated for 1 p.m. Fans can find more information on the softball program at www.unweagles.com.
