ST. PAUL, MINN. – Opening up their second season as the earliest lacrosse game ever played outdoors in Minnesota, the University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team (1-0) secured a 17-6 victory over Monmouth College (0-1) Saturday evening on their home turf. The game marked a special win, as it was in dedication to Head Coach,
Taylor Deetjen's father, who recently passed away. The team wore blue ribbons in his honor.
UNW put together a solid performance throughout the first 30:00 of play, as the lady Eagles fronted a 7-4 halftime lead over the visiting Scots.
Composing a stellar second period of play, Northwestern went on to bury 10 more goals on the game, which eventually gave the home team enough of an advantage to clinch the season-opening victory (17-6).
Eugenia Chamberlain (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) had an impressive presentation for the start of year two, as the senior attacker led the pack with five goals, three assists, and seven ground balls. Following suit, Freshman
Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) and Sophomore
Hannah Shands (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi) could not have asked for a better way to begin their campaigns, as they finished the night with four goals apiece. Shands also scooped three grounder, while Sherry noted two as well as three assists.
As a collective group, the Eagles concluded the contest with a grand total of 47 shots, 35 shots on goal, 24 ground balls, and went 15-21 on clears.
