DEERFIELD, ILL. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team battled Trinity International University [13-6-1 overall] in a NCCAA North Central Regional Championship contest Wednesday at Schartner Field. The Trojans won the mid-day match, 3-0, over the visiting Eagles to advance to the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida.
TIU won the first 45, as they netted the lone goal on the period to boost a 1-0 lead at the intermission break. Trinity also held the advantage in shots at the end of the first frame, 14-3.
Taking on the second half, UNW put on the pressure as they looked to equalize the score. The purple and gold had several attempts on goal, but were unable to capitalize offensively.
TIU found the back of the net two more times before the end of regulation, which was enough to secure the victory [3-0] over the visiting Eagles.
Capping of the contest, UNW totaled four shots [2 SOG], while TIU recorded 27 shots [16 SOG].
Guarding the cage the entire 90 minutes, Goalkeeper
Samantha Dewey (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) put on yet another strong performance as she closed the regional contest with 13 saves, respectively.
With the loss, Northwestern concludes the 2017 season with a 12-8-1 overall record.
UNW will say goodbye to eight seniors, as Dewey, Toria Gillson,
Megan Larsen (Appleton, Wis./Appleton East),
Anna Hitterdal (St. Louis Park, Minn./Southwest Christian),
Emily Goeppinger (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield),
Aislinn Kavanaugh (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy),
Kimi Compton (Rosemount, Minn./Apple Valley), and
Anna Martinson (Apple Valley, Minn./Homeschool) all played their last game in Northwestern uniforms Wednesday.
