ST. PAUL, MINN. – In Saturday's conference matchup against Northland College [2-8-1, 1-4-1 UMAC], the University of Northwestern women's soccer team defeated the visiting Lumberjills, 2-0, to push its win streak to three. With the triumph, the Eagles advance to 6-5-1 overall and remain first in UMAC play [6-0-1] with five consecutive league wins.
The first 45-minute frame was well contested, as the scoreboard sat steady [0-0] up until the 28' mark.
Scoring off of a free position kick from 40 yards out, Freshman defender
Taylor Brinkman (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) sank her first-ever collegiate goal to give UNW a 1-0 advantage they would take into the intermission break.
On the half, Northwestern fired off an impressive 13 shots [10 SOG], while Northland noted one shot [0 SOG].
The Eagles wasted no time on getting things going in the second period, as
Emily Goeppinger (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) buried her penalty kick shot three minutes into the half to extend UNW's lead, 2-0. From then on, Northwestern's back line – consisting of Brickman,
Anna Martinson (Apple Valley, Minn./Homeschool),
Dana Lehtinen (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove), and
Aislinn Kavanaugh (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) – took control and locked down the game, keeping the visiting team from scoring on the 90-minute battle.
Securing the 2-0 victory on the mid-day match, the Eagles totaled 18 shots [14 SOG], while the Lumberjills recorded nine shots [1 SOG].
