Lehtinen’s Header Goals Help UNW Tab 4-2 Win Over UMM

ST. PAUL, MINN. – In Wednesday's mid-day battle against the University of Minnesota Morris (6-6-1, 4-3-1 UMAC), the University of Northwestern women's soccer team clinched a 4-2-comeback victory over the visiting Cougars to stay first in conference. Extending their win streak to four, the Eagles advance to 7-5-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in league play with a 7-0-1 record.
 
UMM came out strong, netting two goals by the 30-minute mark to stretch a 2-0 lead. Shortly following, UNW's Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) lifted the score, 1-2, as she netted the teams first with 15 minutes remaining in the half.
 
Trailing the Cougars, 2-1, at the intermission break, Northwestern managed to outshoot Morris, 11-6.
 
Opening up the second period, Dana Lehtinen (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) equalized the score, 2-2, scoring a header goal off of Anna Martinson (Apple Valley, Minn./Homeschool)'s corner kick. Three minutes later, Maddie Leever (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny Christian) knocked one in, allowing the Eagles to take a 3-2 lead.
 
Lehtinen's dominant efforts continued, as she buried the game-winning goal for the Eagles at the 62' window off of another header shot. Martinson helped out in the action once again, as her corner kick earned her another assist.
 
Securing a 4-2 victory on the day's competition, the Eagles totaled 29 shots [20 SOG], outshining the Cougars 13 shots [9 SOG].
 
The game leaders on the afternoon were Lehtinen [6S  3 SOG / 2G], Norman [5S / 3 SOG / 1G], Leever [4S / 2 SOG / 1G], and Martinson [4S / 3 SOG / 2A].
 
The purple and gold will play next at UW-Superior on Tuesday, October 17. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The live action can be found at www.unweagles.com.
