Northwestern Soars To 4-1 Win Over UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, WIS. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Superior, 4-1, on the road Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Eagles rise to 8-5-1 on the season and boast an 8-0-1 record in UMAC play to stay on the top of the conference.

Taking on the first 45-minute frame, UNW's Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) came out strong, as the sophomore forward tapped in the first goal of the game to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Teammate Anna Martinson (Apple Valley, Minn./Homeschool) helped in the action, as the senior defender was credited the assist.

Not long after, UWS sank one for the home team to make it a 1-1 ball game.

With ten minutes left in the half, Northwestern's Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) buried the team's second, giving the Eagles a 2-1 advantage they would take into the intermission break.

Capitalizing on the second period, Maddie Leever (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny Christian) and Welch both netted a goal apiece, allowing UNW to soar to a 4-1 victory over UWS. In her solid efforts, Martinson tabbed her second assist of the game off Welch's game-winning goal, respectively.

On the contest, the Eagles outshot the Yellowjackets, 25-3.

UNW's game leaders on the day's competition were Welch [8S / 4 SOG / 2G], Norman [5S / 4 SOG / 1G], Leever [4S / 2 SOG / 1G], and Martinson [2A].

The purple and gold will return home for a non-conference contest against Concordia-Moorhead on Thursday, October 19. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. Fans unable to attend can catch the live action at www.unweagles.com.
