Eagles Fall To Cobbers In 2-1 Double Overtime Battle

ST. PAUL, MINN. – In Thursday's non-conference battle against Concordia College-Moorhead, The University of Northwestern women's soccer team was unable to push past the visiting Cobbers, falling short 2-1 in double overtime. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 8-6-1 on the season.

Taking on the first half, both teams were eager to find the back of the net. The Cobbers managed to find an opening first, scoring the lone goal on the half at the 4:30 mark to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission break.

On the first 45-minute frame, UNW had a strong defensive performance, holding CCM to only three shots.

Throughout the second period, Northwestern used a strong attack to catch Concordia. Efforts from Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) on the offensive front gave Northwestern the edge it needed. With 1:13 remaining in regulation, Anna Welch (Lakeville, Minn./Homeschool) buried one for the Eagles to equalize the score, 1-1.

Taking UNW into two overtime periods, the hard-fought battle was won by CCM, as the visiting team knocked in the game-winning goal in the second overtime frame to clinch a 2-1 victory.

Concluding the contest, Northwestern and Concordia both finished with 11 shots (6 SOG).

The game leaders on the night's competition were Welch (2S / 2 SOG / 1G) and Anna Hitterdal (St. Louis Park, Minn./Southwest Christian) (4S / 2 SOG). On the defensive end, Goalkeeper Samantha Dewey (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) caught four saves for the purple and gold.

The squad will travel next to Martin Luther College on Saturday, October 21, for the chance to keep its conference record unblemished (8-0-1 UMAC). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Fans can find the live game coverage at www.unweagles.com.
