MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern football team scored all 21 of its points in the fourth quarter – with 14 of those coming in a span of less than a minute – to top Minnesota Morris, 21-14, Saturday night under the lights at Big Cat Stadium. The Eagles improve to 5-4 overall and 5-3 in UMAC play, while Minnesota Morris drops to 1-8 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
The only points scored through the first three quarters came via a pair of Cougar field goals in the first half.
Northwestern broke the scoring drought early in the fourth quarter when Peyton Bowdry scored from two yards out to cap an 11-play, 68-yard drive that chewed up 5:12. Minnesota Morris then took the ensuing kickoff to the house to regain the lead, 14-7.
A Bowdry three-yard touchdown dive and
Ben Lyons (North Olmstead, Ohio/Ohio Distance & Electronic Learning Academy) PAT following an eight-play, 37-yard scoring drive knotted the game at 14-14. Minnesota Morris then fumbled on the succeeding kick return and the Eagles took over at the Cougar 35-yard line.
Less than a minute later,
Dom McDew (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) recovered a fumble in the end zone to provide the go-ahead score for UNW. The Eagles would then hang on for the 21-14 victory.
Taylor Lindahl (Watertown, S.D./Watertown) finished 16-of-26 for 132 yards under center and McDew led a balanced ground attack with 40 yards on 13 attempts.
Gavin Welch (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) hauled in three receptions for 64 yards to lead the receiving corps.
Gideon Burnham (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson) posted nine tackles, including a key sack on the Cougar's last drive, to pace the defense.
Beau Walter (Conway, Ark./Conway) and
Aaron Regnier (Hawley, Minn./Hawley) each had eight stops and
Tyler Van Maanen (Oshkosh, Wis./Valley Christian) notched a sack.
The Eagles will close out their season next Saturday at home with a 1 p.m. game with Crown College. Fans can find more information on the football program at
