ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern defense limited Iowa Wesleyan (1-6, 1-5) to just nine yards of passing and 166 yards of total offense, as the Eagles snapped a two-game skid with a 29-7 win over the visiting Tigers Saturday at Reynolds Field. With the win, Northwestern improves to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
The Eagles held a rare 5-0 advantage after the first quarter, as
Ben Lyons (North Olmstead, Ohio/Ohio Distance & Electronic Learning Academy) booted a 48-yard field goal – the third-longest in program history – the give UNW a 3-0 lead. The Eagles then tacked on a safety after an Iowa Wesleyan snap went over the punter's head and out the back of the end zone.
In the second, it was UNW answering an IWU touchdown with two short rushing touchdowns, as
Taylor Lindahl (Watertown, S.D./Watertown) capitalized on an
Aaron Regnier (Hawley, Minn./Hawley) fumble recovery, crossing the goal line from a yard out before
Dom McDew (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) found paydirt on a three-yard plunge with just over two minutes remaining in the half. McDew's score capped a 7-play, 59-yard drive.
After a scoreless third, Northwestern tacked on to its 19-7 lead into the fourth quarter with a
Ben Lyons (North Olmstead, Ohio/Ohio Distance & Electronic Learning Academy) 40-yard field goal and McDew's second three-yard touchdown rush of the day.
Payton Bowdry (Minneapolis, Minn./South) covered 78 yards on 25 carries, while McDew finished with 57 rushing yards to go along with his two touchdowns.
Taylor Lindahl (Watertown, S.D./Watertown) finished 10-of-21 for 111 yards through the air, completing passes to eight different receivers. Freshman
Nate VanBeusekom (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) had the catch of the day along the sideline, snagging a 32-yard reception.
Gideon Burnham (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson) posted a season-high 3.0 sacks en route to finishing with nine tackles, while
Aaron Regnier (Hawley, Minn./Hawley) also posted nine stops.
Ryan Van Maanen (Oshkosh, Wis./Valley Christian) forced a pair of fumbles, and
Nick Swore (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian),
Jadon Hatt (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) and
Daniel Fenske (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) all had a pick. Saturday marked Hatt's first game action of his collegiate career. Swore leads the UMAC with five interceptions this season.
