ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team put the finishing touches on an unblemished front end of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) slate, as the Eagles rolled to an 86-55 win over Martin Luther College (1-14, 0-8) Saturday inside a packed Ericksen Center in the annual Hoops Hysteria contest. UNW – who is now 8-0 in loop play – moves to 11-4 overall on the season.
Northwestern built a comfortable 46-23 halftime lead before tacking on 40 more in the second frame to pick up the victory.
Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) capped off a monster weekend with a 22-point effort, drilling six treys and finishing 7-of-10 from the field. He also dished out three assists and made both free throw attempts.
Peter Maring (Harris, Minn./Cambridge Christian) turned in his second double-digit effort of the weekend, as he put in 13 points, matching teammate
Anderson Bazile Jr. (Houston, Tex./San Antonio Reagan) who finished with a trio of 3-pointers.
Aaron Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area) was the fourth Eagle in double figures, as he chipped in 12 points. Maring also pulled down nine boards.
The hot-shooting Eagles ended the night hitting 45.6 percent of their shots from the floor and a blistering 48.4 percent from downtown. In addition, UNW finished 9-for-9 at the charity stripe.
The Eagles will remain at home for a midweek contest with Trinity Bible next Tuesday. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
