Volleyball Stays Perfect With Two Wins Saturday

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern volleyball team remained perfect on the season (4-0) and did it in style, as the Eagles didn't drop a set in a pair of wins on Day Two of the UNW Labor Day Tournament Saturday inside the Ericksen Center. The 23rd-ranked Eagles topped Westminster College before defeating Loras College in their tournament finale. It was also a memorable day for Jackie Doering (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City), who surpassed 1,000-career digs in UNW's second match.

Game One vs. Westminster (25-14, 25-23, 25-20)
Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) paced the Eagles with 10 kills and Freya Hanson (Otsego, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) added eight to lift the Eagles over the Blue Jays. Kaelyn Kilbo (Delano, Minn./Delano) picked up 15 assists, while Coral Hulcher (Oakton, Va./Oakton) contributed 10. Kilbo also tallied a pair of serving aces.

The Eagles held an 8-4 advantage in the blocks category.

Game Two vs. Loras (25-13, 25-23, 25-18)
Peterson smashed a match-high 15 kills and Jackie Doering (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) – who went over 1,000 career digs in the match – finished with 19 digs. Peterson also had a pair of service aces. Toria Gillson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Christian) had a big day at the net, notching five blocks, while Shanay Gonder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) continued her dominance in the middle, recording five blocks.

Northwestern hit .333, while holding Loras to a .064 hitting percentage.

For their weekend efforts, Shanay Gonder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) and Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Eagles will be off until next weekend when they travel across town to compete in the Augsburg College Tournament Friday and Saturday.
