DULUTH, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team battled Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rival St. Scholastica in a road contest on Saturday afternoon. Though the Eagles performed with outstanding efforts, the Saints were able to run away with the 2-1 victory.
Beginning the first period with a strong attack, CSS managed to knock in two early goals to stretch a 2-0 lead. Completing the rest of the half, UNW shut down CSS's offense to tally 15S / 2SOG.
Throughout the second, the Eagles tried their best to gain momentum as the Saints still held a 2-0 lead. Northwestern's opportunity finally came at the 76', as
Katie Meinke (Victoria, Minn./Southwest Christian) buried her first goal on the season to lift the score 1-2. Northwestern continued in their strong fight to the finish, but were unable to hold off St. Scholastica from clinching the 2-1 win.
UNW topped off the second half with 12S / 5SOG, as CSS noted 17S / 8SOG.
Northwestern's stat leaders consisted of
Jordan Lubben (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) and
Emily Goeppinger (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) who attempted 2S / 1SOG, as Meinke tabbed 2S/2SOG, and
Rachel Walmsley (Lino Lakes, Minn./Homeschool) 2S. As a team, the Eagles accumulated a grand total of 12S and 5SOG to close the mid-day match.
The women will continue play on Tuesday, September 20
