Swigart Picks Up 100th Win; Eagles Split in La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The University of Northwestern's women's tennis team rode the pendulum of success Saturday. The Northwestern Eagles cruised to a win over Edgewood College Eagles (8-1) before suffering a sweep (9-0) against University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles.

The win over Edgewood gave Head Coach Matt Swigart his 100th career victory at Northwestern.

Northwestern started the day on a tear, with five of the six singles competitions coming out in favor of the purple and gold. Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) tallied another win in No. 1 singles (6-0, 7-5) to further add to her win column. Emily Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) faced a tough matchup in No. 6 singles (7-5, 6-2) and came away with the victory. All three doubles pairings notched wins for Northwestern, including an impressive 8-1 control from Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and Emily Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) in No. 3 doubles.

In the second match of the day, the Eagles of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wiped out the joy from the earlier success. Moe dropped her first singles match of the season (6-3, 6-3) to end her quest for perfection this year. The doubles pairing of Jessica Henke (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) and Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing)kept the match close, but ultimately fell in No. 2 doubles (8-6) to end the road trip.

The women's tennis team will resume play on Monday, April 11, at 3 p.m. from Reynolds Field at the University of Northwestern. The Eagles will take to the purple courts for a double-header against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, with Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play getting under way against the North Central University Rams.
