Eagles Clinch 11-10 Sudden Death Victory Over Carroll University

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern (2-12) women's lacrosse team faced off against Carroll University (4-10) at Reynolds Field on Saturday afternoon. Soaring to new heights, the Eagles sealed the 11-10 sudden death victory over the Pioneers, to whom they previously lost to (11-10) earlier in the season.

In the opening four minutes of play, Grace Daggett (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) netted her first goal of the game, as teammate Molly Repp (Minburn, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) snatched the assist. Daggett's goal gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

UNW defense made it tough for CU to find the back of the net, as the next eight minutes remained scoreless. At the 18:34 mark, Carroll knocked in their first goal of the afternoon to tie the score 1-1. CU then went on to drop another to take a 2-1 lead.

Shortly following Carroll's second, Northwestern went on the attack to add four. By the 8:12 mark, UNW led CU 5-2.

Carroll was able to find its final window of opportunity of the period, as the Pioneers sank a goal with 7:46 remaining. UNW then answered back with one to stamp a 6-3 lead to wrap up the first half.

The Eagles dominated the second half, as the team never lost the lead to the Pioneers. Eugenia Chamberlain (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) came up clutch, as she blasted a goal 12 seconds into the period to bump the score 7-3.

CU was able to grab two more goals (7-5) before UNW found their next. Jodi Bertrand (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls) tapped in her first of the game with 23:00 on the clock, which allowed the Eagles to gain an 8-5 lead.

Carroll then battled back to earn three unanswered goals, which tied up the ball game 8-8 with 13:56 to go. Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Montomedi) found the back of the net 30 seconds later to give the Eagles a 9-8 lead.

Fans roared and teammates exchanged high fives as Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) received her first goal on the season, which allowed UNW to hold a 10-8 lead over CU.

In a last stitch effort, Carroll buried two more goals to tie the contest 10-10. Since both teams were unable to score with the time remaining, the game resulted in sudden death.

On her hat trick goal, Broberg scored in the last two minutes of sudden death to cap the 11-10 victory. The Eagles now advance to 2-12 on the season.

Closing the afternoon contest, Broberg concluded with three goals, 17 shots, and four ground balls. Daggett and Repp both closed with two goals, as teammates Tumbleson, Chamberlain, Cotter, and Bertrand all secured one.

To top off the match, the Eagle's contributed 44 shots (23 on goal), went 17-23 on clears, scooped 39 ground balls, had 13 draw controls, and earned nine free position shots.

The team will close their season in a final home contest against Hamline University on Tuesday, May 5, at Reynolds Field. Draw time is set for 7 p.m. Visit www.unweagles.com for more information.
