ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern (1-12) women's lacrosse team took on Wartburg College (7-7) at Reynolds Field on Tuesday evening. In what was a hard-fought 60:00 ball game, the visiting Wartburg Knights sealed the 10-9 victory.
The opening 10 minutes were a back and forth battle. Both teams added two goals to the scoreboard, as Wartburg came on strong to net the first goal of the match.
The Eagles remained calm, as
Eugenia Chamberlain (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) sank Northwestern's first at the 24:00 mark to tie it 1-1. Shortly following, Wartburg answered back by dropping another goal.
At the 20:00 window,
Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Montomedi) targeted her first goal of the contest to once again tie up the match 2-2. Broberg went on to add another to give UNW their first lead of the night, 3-2, with 15:00 remaining in the half.
UNW offense kicked it into gear, as
Grace Daggett (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) found the back of the net two minutes later to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead. After an additional two minutes, Broberg tallied her hat trick goal to stretch the lead 5-2. The Knights netted one more goal with 30 seconds left on the clock to trail UNW 5-3 at the half.
Wartburg came out ready to rock, as they secured two goals to begin the second half and tie the game 5-5.
The Eagles then found their sixth, as Broberg added her fourth goal of the game, and Chamberlain earned her second assist. With 25:45 remaining, UNW held a 6-5 lead.
After five minutes of scoreless play, Wartburg was able to sink their sixth to once again tie the score 6-6.
Just under the 18:00 mark, the Knights took their second lead of the evening to bump up their 7-6 score. UNW battled back, as Daggett netted her second goal with 15:30 remaining on the ticker to make it a 7-7 ball game.
Broberg knocked in another to wrap up the contest with five goals, as Daggett earned her last to close with a hat trick. UNW held a 9-7 lead with 10:11 remaining.
Wartburg proceeded to post three unanswered goals, as two Northwestern players were put in the penalty box within the last three minutes.
UNW called a time out with 1:45 left, as the Eagle's trailed Wartburg 10-9. The team fought hard to pull off the comeback win, but Wartburg ran away with the 10-9 victory to close the evening contest.
Broberg swept the top of the leader board with five goals, as she advances to 25 goals on the season. Teammates Daggett and Chamberlain also had strong showings, as Daggett finished with three and Chamberlain one.
To top off the night under the lights, the Eagle's noted 19 shots (14 on goal), went 16-21 on clears, matched Wartburg on ground balls (27), had seven draw controls, and earned four free position shots.
