ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The University of Norhtwestern's women's tennis team traveled up the up the road for the Snelling Derby, taking on Bethel University on Monday afternoon. The Royals got the better of the Eagles, nearly sweeping the contest (8-1).
The Eagles struggled in the non-conference contest, conceding all but one singles matchups.
Nikki Edin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley) provided the lone victory of the day for UNW (6-3, 7-6 [7-5]) in No. 6 singles. In No. 1 singles,
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) came out with a rare defeat (4-6, 6-2, 0-1 [12-14]). The Purple and Gold had a difficult time gaining any traction, with three singles matchups ending quickly. Freshman
Emily Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) forced an extra set (3-6, 6-3, 1-0 [3-10]) before dropping the matchup.
In doubles play, Moe and her partner
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) lost in No. 1 doubles (8-3), while
Jessica Henke (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) and
Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) fell in the No. 2 doubles matchup by the same score. Knight and
Nikki Edin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley) finished the day for the Purple and Gold, falling in No. 3 doubles (8-2).
The Eagles will be back in UMAC play Thursday taking on the University of Minnesota Morris. UNW will play the Cougars Thursday and Saturday before heading into the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) regional tournament.
