SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Eagles' women's tennis team played a perfect day on the purple Johnson Courts at Reynolds Field. Northwestern hosted Bethany Lutheran College, followed by Martin Luther College in the afternoon. The women's team is off to an impressive 4-1 record in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) competition this season, including an undefeated – and entirely unblemished – record at home.
UNW 9, BLC 0UNW 9, MLC 0 The Eagles opened the day against the Vikings of Bethany Lutheran College (9-0) with a clean sweep.
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) took care of No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-1) with ease. Just
Nikki Edin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley) managed a perfect match (6-0, 6-0), claiming the victory in No. 6 singles. Northwestern swept doubles play as well, as Edin continued her spotless event (8-0) with partner
Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) in No. 3 doubles.
Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Jessica Henke (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) grabbed No. 2 doubles (8-2), while Moe and
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) notched the victory (8-1) in the No. 1 match.
Northwestern returned to action later in the day, taking on the Martin Luther College Knights (9-0) in yet another sweep on the purple courts. Moe kept her scorecard spotless (6-0) in No. 1 singles, while Henke took No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-2) by a wide margin.
Emily Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) picked up the victory in No. 5 singles (6-1, 6-1) and Bostrom finished off No. 6 singles (6-0, 6-2) to keep things perfect. The Eagles again dominated in doubles play, with Bostrom and Knight (8-2) having the worst showing of the three Northwestern pairings in a convincing win. Both the pairings of Moe and Lapinski and Matetich and Henke ended doubles play (8-1) at full strength.
The Eagles will be head up the road to take on Bethel University on Monday, April 18, at 4 p.m. UMAC play will resume at the University of Minnesota-Morris on Thursday, April 21.
