ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern (1-11) women's lacrosse team took on the University of Dallas (4-7) in its fourth home contest at Reynolds Field on Saturday afternoon. In what was an even match-up, the Eagles fell short in the 13-6 battle against Dallas.
Grace Daggett (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) sank the first goal of the game at the 27:00 mark to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Dallas struck back on the attack to net two goals and take a 2-1 advantage.
Shortly following Dallas' two,
Molly Repp (Minburn, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) earned UNW's second goal of the game to make it an even 2-2 score with 19:00 remaining in the first half.
Dallas then went on to stretch the lead by scoring three goals. Dagget and
Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Montomedi) both pocketed a goal on free positions shots for UNW to trim the deficit.
Emily Wirtz (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) fired up the home fans, as she answered with her first goal of the game, as teammate
Eugenia Chamberlain (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) received the assist to make it a 6-5 score with 58 seconds to go in the half. Dallas added one more goal, as UNW trailed 7-5 at halftime.
Dallas began the second half with hot hands, as they netted a goal within the opening two minutes. The next 15:00 were a back-and-forth battle, as both teams were unable to find the back of the net.
While Dallas held a 9-5 lead, UNW offense did not give up as Chamberlain netted her first goal of the game with just over 13:00 left to play.
To conclude the match, Dallas went on to add four unanswered goals. Though UNW put forth a tremendous effort, the Eagles fell short, 13-6, in the afternoon contest.
Dagget closed on top of the leaderboard with two goals, 10 shots, six ground balls, and one draw control. Teammates Broberg, Chamberlain, Wirtz, and Repp each added a goal as well. As a team, the Eagles finished with 27 shots on goal, 11 free position shots, and 10 draw controls.
Goalie,
Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North), also had a strong showing for the Eagles, as she recorded nine saves to wrap up the afternoon. Werlein has now accumulated 59 saves overall on the season.
