ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern (1-3) women's lacrosse competed against Concordia University Chicago (0-5) in a victorious 12-10 contest at Reynolds Field on Wednesday afternoon. A well-fought battle secured Northwestern's first-ever win in program history.
Northwestern fired off 17 shots in the first half, allowing six different players to net goals against tough Cougar defense. Attacker
Emily Wirtz (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) found the back of the net to put the Eagles on the scoreboard while midfielders
Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Montomedi) and
Grace Daggett (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) answered with a second and third goal.
Defender
Molly Repp (Minburn, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) and midfielder
Eugenia Chamberlain (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) each drilled in a fastball, and
Jodi Bertrand (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls) completed a wrap around goal that gave Northwestern a 6-4 lead to conclude the first half.
Concordia's Margaret Doane closed the first half with three goals, as teammate Anna Kellar finished with one.
The Eagles continued their offensive battle all throughout the second half despite Concordia sinking eight goals. Northwestern reacted by scoring another six.
Daggett buried three more goals in the second half to conclude the match with four goals overall, and Broberg dropped two more goals to close the game on a hat trick.
With one minute remaining, Wirtz and Broberg each netted a goal, which allowed Northwestern to seal its 12-10 first-ever program victory.
