Softball Drops Pair of Games at Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern softball team (5-15) dropped a pair of non-conference games at Augsburg College (11-7 ) Thursday evening inside the Augsburg dome. The Eagles fell 9-1 in the opener, before suffering a heartbreaking 5-4 extra-inning loss in the nightcap.

Game One
The host Auggies put four runs on the board in the first and second frames and shut down the UNW bats to take the opener. The Eagles' lone run came in the third inning when Jennifer Ankrom (New Hampton, Iowa/New Hampton) doubled to center, scoring Ann Lokke (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis).

Megan Threlkeld (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) and Ellen Larkin (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) recorded Northwestern's other hits at the plate. Lauren Silbernick (Osakis, Minn./Osakis) suffered the loss in the circle, surrendering nine runs in four innings of work.

Game Two
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame, as Colleen Feldheim (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy) delivered a two-run single to give UNW an early advantage. Augsburg put a four-spot on the board in the home half of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead before Northwestern answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to even the score at 4-4.

With neither team able to muster any offense, the contest was extended to extra innings, where Augsburg scored on a wild pitch in the ninth to escape with the win.

Ann Lokke (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis), Jennifer Ankrom (New Hampton, Iowa/New Hampton) and Feldheim all posted big performances at the dish, notching two hits apiece. Despite a solid outing, Meghan Schroeder (Big Lake, Minn./Spectrum) was tagged with the loss, hurling 8.1 innings, surrendering four earned runs.

The Eagles will return to Reynolds Field Saturday to host the University of Wisconsin-Stout in a doubleheader. More information can be found at www.unweagles.com
