UNW Headed Back to NCAA Tournament For Sixth-Straight Year

DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team is heading back to familiar territory – the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Eagles used a near flawless performance on the road at the College of St. Scholastica to earn their sixth-straight trip to the big dance Saturday, defeating the top-seeded Saints 93-70 in front of a packed Reif Gymnasium in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Championship.

Balanced, veteran, deep – the list to describe Head Coach Tim Grosz's gritty bunch goes on and on. Saturday proved to be no different, as UNW had four players score 15 or more points, while eight players logged 10 minutes or more of game action.

Will Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville), who poured in a game-high 18 points, was named the UMAC Tournament's Most Valuable Player for his performance Wednesday against North Central and tonight's showing against CSS.

Fans getting their first look at Anderson Bazile Jr. (Houston, Tex./San Antonio Reagan) would have never guessed that the UNW guard was a freshman, as the Houston native played poised and confident from the tip, scoring 12 first-half points and finishing with 17. Michael Carney (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) produced his first double-double of the season, as he netted 15 points and grabbed 11 boards, while Cody Sprenger (Grey Eagle, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) (15) and Kyle Ooms (Hollandale, MN/Albert Lea High School) (12) also hit double figures.

With his three made 3-pointers tonight, Carney moves into second all-time on Northwestern's career made threes list.

Northwestern shot the ball extremely well, compiling a 50.7 shooting percentage, while finishing a blistering 52 percent from long range.

The Eagles hit the offensive glass and converted those boards into second chance points, as they outscored the saints 23-9 in the category. UNW also took care of the ball, committing just six turnovers.

The Eagles will find out their tournament fate on Monday during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, which will take play on Monday at 11:30 a.m. (CT). More info will be available at www.unweagles.com
