Men’s and Women’s Basketball Set to Host Semifinal Contests Wednesday

ST. PAUL – It will be a basketball-filled Wednesday evening on campus Wednesday night, as both the University of Northwestern men's and women's basketball teams will host Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinal games inside the Ericksen Center. The men will host North Central University, while the women will welcome Bethany Lutheran College.

Men's Preview
No. 2 UNW (20-5) vs. No. 3 NCU (13-12) – 5:30 p.m.

The Eagles and Ram will meet for the third time this season after the two foes split during the regular season. NCU defeated UNW 76-72 on January 2 before Northwestern retaliated with a 93-79 win in Minneapolis on February 6. UNW's storyline this season has been balance, as six Eagles are averaging double-digit scoring numbers. Senior Michael Carney (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian), who is coming off his best weekend of the season, leads UNW with a 13.4 points per game average. Head Coach Tim Grosz reached the 20-win milestone for the eighth time in his 16 seasons at the helm.

Women's Preview
No. 2 UNW (20-5) vs. No. 3 BLC (14-11) – 7:30 p.m.

The Eagles enter the weekend having won 11 of their last 13 contests. UNW swept the regular season series over BLC, defeating the Vikings 77-56 in Mankato before winning a 68-65 thriller 11 days ago inside the Ericksen Center. Sophomore Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) has had a strong sophomore campaign, as the Springfield, Va., native is pouring in 13.6 points per game to lead the Eagles. She sits four steals away from setting the Northwestern single-season steals record. Regan Cooper (Pella, Iowa/Pella) has been a presence down low, scoring just under 10 points per game, while also grabbing 7.9 rebounds per game. Head Coach Aaron Kahl – now in his sixth year – led the Eagles to their second 20-win season under his watch.
