MINNEAPOLIS – In what was a historic night for the University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team, the Eagles put together a strong showing against the University of Dubuque, battling for 60 minutes against the Spartans. Dubuque – now in its fourth year with lacrosse as a varsity sport – defeated UNW by a final of 21-8 inside the Augsburg Dome late Saturday night. It was the first-ever women's lacrosse contest in Northwestern history, who announced last year they would sponsor the sport at the varsity level.
After the Spartans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead,
Eugenia Chamberlain (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) scored two goals in a span of five minutes to cut the UD lead to 3-2. Dubuque then scored six-straight goals and never relinquished the lead, taking a 12-6 advantage into the half and prevailing by a final of 21-8.
Chamberlain stole in the show in the inaugural game, as she found the back of the net four times to lead the Eagles, while also assisting on three goals.
Grace Daggett (Hastings, Minn./Hastings),
Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Montomedi),
Emily Wirtz (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) and
Molly Repp (Minburn, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) all added a goal for UNW. Goalkeeper
Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) made six saves in net.
The Eagles will next be in action when they take their spring break trip to Colorado. UNW will play a pair of games in Colorado Springs, beginning with a March 4 contest against Colorado College. Fans can find more information on the lacrosse season at
