WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. – The University of Northwestern's women's tennis team faced off against Hamline University on Friday night at Lifetime Fitness in White Bear Lake. The Eagles dominated the matchup, winning 8-1 over the Pipers. Northwestern climbs to 4-1 on the season, rebounding after last weekend's narrow loss.
UNW 8, HU 1 The Eagles were nearly perfect in singles play, as
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) continued her streak of perfection, winning handedly (6-1, 6-0) in No. 1 singles. Senior
Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) took No. 5 singles to the limit (1-6, 6-3, 10-5) and pulled off the win. Northwestern also had exciting play from
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) (3-6, 6-3, 10-8) as she snuck out another Eagle victory. The lone loss of the day came in No. 2 singles, as
Jessica Henke (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) lost by forfeit.
The women carried the success across the board, taking all three doubles matchups in commanding fashion. Partners Moe and Henke took No. 1 doubles (8-3), getting back into the routine of winning. Lapinski teamed up with
Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) in No. 2 doubles (8-2) for another Northwestern victory. In No. 3 doubles, Bostrom and freshman
Nikki Edin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley), brought home another statement victory (8-3) for the Eagles.
UNW will travel to Duluth next Saturday, February 27, to square off in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play against the College of St. Scholastica. Play will begin at 12 p.m. as Northwestern attempts to snag a win before taking off for Tampa, Fla.
