ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team started off its Saturday morning in style, as the Eagles rolled to a 9-0 non-conference victory over North Central University at the Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville. In its second match of the day, UNW battled in a tough 5-4 loss to St. Catherine University at Baseline Tennis Center. With Saturday's split, Northwestern moves to 3-1 on the season.
UNW 9, NCU 0UNW cruised through its singles matches, surrendering just one set throughout the entire six matchups.
Emily Jennings (Baldwin, Wis./Baldwin - Woodville) came in and had a strong showing in her season debut, picking up a straight-sets win.
The Eagles carried that momentum to their doubles matches, as
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) and
Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (No. 1 double) and
Emily Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and
Emily Jennings (Baldwin, Wis./Baldwin - Woodville) (No. 3 doubles) posted 8-0 victories to help Northwestern lock up a 9-0 victory.
SCU 5, UNW 4UNW battled through all nine matches in the nightcap, but suffered its first setback of the season against the Wildcats.
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) got things started at No. 1 singles, earning a 6-0, 6-4 win, while Lapinski and
Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) also notched wins in singles play.
SCU took two of the three doubles matches to prevail, 5-4. Bostrom and
Nikki Edin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley) paired up at No. 3 doubles to record an 8-4 win. Matetich and Lapinski dropped a thriller at No. 2 doubles, losing the tiebreaker 10-5.
The Eagles will take on Hamline University next Friday at the Lifetime Fitness in White Bear Lake. The contest is set to get underway at 6 p.m.
