Eagles Come Up Short To UC Santa Cruz In Mid-Week Battle

SANTA CRUZ, CALIF. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team competed against UC Santa Cruz (5-6) at the Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz, California on Tuesday evening. The Eagles – falling short to 57-49 to UCSC – now move to 5-5 on the season.

Opening up the first 10:00 of play, the home team posted an early 14-8 lead over the Eagles. In their best efforts, UNW followed closely behind as they trailed by eight (27-19) at the half.

Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and Rachel Hart (Elgin, Minn./Home School) led the crew at intermission, recording seven points apiece. Berglund also grabbed eight rebounds for the Eagles, as Hart snatched two.  

Over the course of the third quarter, UNW gained momentum as they outscored UCSC 20-14. Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) stepped up her game, as she added 10 points to the scoreboard while Berglund noted nine and Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) with six.

The Banana Slugs went on to overtake the Eagles 16-10 in the final 10:00 stretch, which helped them secure a 57-49 win over the visiting team.

Northwestern shot 36.4% from the field, while UC Santa Cruz finished the match by shooting 27.4% from the floor. As a team, the Eagles also posted 50 rebounds (15 OFF & 35 DEF), 17 assists, four steals, and four blocks to conclude the night's contest.

The game leaders on the match were Berglund (16 pts, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 steal), Tumbleson (10pts, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 block), and Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) (9pts, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 steal).
