INDIANAPOLIS – It was a memorable first season for
Eugenia Chamberlain (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) and her teammates last spring, as the University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team completed the Eagles' first-ever varsity season under the direction of Head Coach
Taylor Deetjen.
Not only was the intense competition history in the making, but so was Chamberlain's strong defensive play, as the senior finished first in the country (Division III) in caused turnovers per game. The captain finished the season with an average of 5.27 caused turnover per contest. For her efforts, Chamberlain was recognized with a statistical champion plaque from the NCAA Headquarters in Indianapolis.
"Jenny is a tremendous captain and lacrosse player," said Deetjen. "If there is one trait to describe Jenny, it is humility. Her hard work and relentlessness shows on the field day in and day out."
By definition of the NCAA Statisticians Manuel, a caused turnover is credited to a player when the player's positive, aggressive action(s) causes a turnover by the opponent. In simple terms, it is taking the ball from the other team in a legal manner.
"Being an independent team and having Jenny ranked as No. 1 in the nation for all Division III teams is incredible," added Deetjen. "I am so thankful for her leadership and cannot wait to see what this next season brings."
Chamberlain and company will begin play in UNW's second year of competition in February. Fans can find more information on the women's lacrosse team by visiting
