Volleyball’s 14-Game Winning Streak Snapped at Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa – The University of Northwestern volleyball team came up short in a battle against regionally-ranked and Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) regular season champion Wartburg College Saturday afternoon. The 3-1 road loss in the regular season finale snaps the Eagles' 14-game winning streak.

The Knights – the Central Regional's eighth-ranked team – took a tight first set before the Eagles evened it at a set apiece with a 25-20 win in set two. Wartburg went up 2-1 with a 28-15 win in set three and then secured the victory with a 25-22 triumph in the fourth.

Northwestern – who held a 9-7 advantage in blocks – hit just .124 for the match.

Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) returned to her home state and the results were much of the same, as the junior notched a double-double with a match-high 23 kills and 16 digs. Leesa Hulstrand (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) put up 21 assists to contribute to the offensive effort. Anna Gasch (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) helped Northwestern have the upper hand at the net, compiling four blocks, while Jackie Doering (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) and Freya Hanson (Otsego, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) racked up 17 and 16 digs, respectively.

The contest was a rematch of last year's NCAA tournament matchup in the second round of the Whitewater Regional – a match in which Northwestern swept Wartburg.

The Eagles – who will be the No. 1 seed in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament – will host an opponent to be determined Wednesday night at 7 p.m. inside the Ericksen Center. Fans can find more information at www.unweagles.com.
