ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team (7-8-1, 4-3) dropped a 3-2 overtime heartbreaker Saturday to the visiting University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets (9-7, 6-1) on Senior Day at Reynolds Field.
Prior to the match, the Eagles honored seniors
Chris Cleope (Waterloo, Iowa./Waterloo West),
Eric Fast (Eagan, Minn./Homeschool),
Adam Molohon (North St. Paul, Minn./North St. Paul) and
Nate Lung (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Homeschool).
UWS took control early, netting a pair of first-half goals to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. The Yellowjackets outshot the Eagles 12-6 in the opening 45 minutes of play and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Trailing with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation,
Chris Cleope (Waterloo, Iowa./Waterloo West) gave the Eagles life, finding the back of the net to trim the UWS lead to 2-1. Just two minutes later, it was Cleope who scored the equalizer on a penalty kick. After the score remained knotted at 2-2 through the 90', overtime was forced. UWS's Eric Watson buried a goal in the 98' to give the Yellowjackets the victory.
Chris Cleope (Waterloo, Iowa./Waterloo West) fired eight shots with five of those being on goal.
Joshua Robertson (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) put four shots on goal to contribute to the offensive attack.
