Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Calli Durst

Northwestern Outshines Finlandia; Stamping 5-0 Win

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team hosted Finlandia University in a hard-fought contest on Thursday evening at Reynolds Field. Capturing the 5-0 win, UNW improves to 7-5 on the season.

Starting of the match, UNW came out ready for battle. Katie Meinke (Victoria, Minn./Southwest Christian) managed to net the first goal of the game at the 26' mark. The Eagles continued to put their best foot forward, as the team recorded 44 shots throughout 45:00 of play to hold a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

In their strong defensive efforts, the Lions goalkeeper tallied an impressive 19 saves on the period.

Leading into the second, Northwestern wasted no time to sink more shots. Linley Norman (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) was able to tab the team's second with 37:00 to go, as Maddie Leever (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny Christian) noted the assist.

The show wasn't over yet, as Meinke's second goal-scoring opportunity gave way with 32:00 remaining, which helped the Eagles boost a 3-0 lead over the Lions. Contributing to the success was Norman who marked the assist.

Making an offense impact, Dana Lehtinen (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) netted one at the 68' mark to stretch the lead 4-0. Anna Martinson (Apple Valley, Minn./Homeschool) also took part in the action, as she added an assist off of Lehtinen's goal.

UNW's final goal was scored by Martinson, who buried a shot from the 40yrd line, as teammate Ellyn Boland (Marshalltown, Iowa./Marshalltown) earned the assist. Capping off the night's match, the Eagles accumulated 93S and 40SOG to help stamp a 5-0 victory over the Lions.

Having an outstanding performance, Finlandia' s keeper caught 35 saves to conclude the competition.

The game leaders on the night were Norman (10S / 7SOG / 1A / 1G), Anna Hitterdal (St. Louis Park, Minn./Southwest Christian) (10S / 2SOG), Meinke (9S / 4SOG / 2G), Martinson (7S / 4SOG / 1G / 1A), Lehtinen (4S / 1SOG / 1G), Emily Goeppinger (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) (8S / 5 SOG), and Megan Larsen (Appleton, Wis./Appleton East) (8S / 2SOG).
