ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team (5-2, 4-1 UMAC) secured its fourth conference win, as the Eagles tabbed a 2-1 victory over Bethany Lutheran College (4-4-2, 2-1-1 UMAC) on Saturday afternoon.
Throughout the first period, the game was a back and forth battle as both teams put forth respectable efforts. The contest remained scoreless up until the 42' mark when UNW's
Emily Goeppinger (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) pounded in a header goal off of
Abbey Lamfers (Edina, Minn./Edina)' chip over BLC defense to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Opening up the second, the Vikings took the field ready for action as they knocked in their first goal at the 53' to make it a 1-1 ball game. The Eagles defense finished strong, as they only allowed Bethany Lutheran to net one on the mid-day match.
Late in the game, Northwestern received a penalty kick opportunity due to a hand ball right outside the box at the 78'. Lamfers stepped up to take the free kick, and sealed the 2-1 victory for the Eagles by shooting the ball into the left corner of the goal.
UNW tallied 19 shots and 14 shots on goal, as BLC marked 11 shots and six shots on goal to conclude the game.
