Ooms' Double-Double Launches Eagles to 78-67 Win Over Morris

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team was victorious at the University of Minnesota Morris Friday night with a 78-67 win.

It wasn't until six minutes remained in the first half when the Cougars trailed by only three points, as Northwestern held onto the 25-22 lead. UMM's CD Douglas tied the game at 29 points with three good free throws with 4:42 on the clock. Kyle Ooms (Hollandale, MN/Albert Lea High School) responded with a dunk, reclaiming the lead. UNW continued to stay ahead going into halftime with a score of 38-34. Morris took the lead for the first time with 14:32 left in the second period, but Clay Elrod (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) responded with a shot from downtown, taking a 57-53 lead for the Eagles. Two consecutive three-pointers from Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) and Will Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) brought the visitors to a 12 point lead, the largest lead so far in the game.

Able to hold off the Cougars, Northwestern improved to a record of 16-3 with a 78-67 victory.

The Eagles shot a mere one percent better than the Cougars in the field, shooting 42.4 percent. However, the home team shot one percent better from behind the arc, shooting 28.6 percent compared to UNW's 27.6.

Morris' CD Douglas had 29 points, leading both teams on the scoreboard. The Eagles had the three next top shooters, as Will Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) (19), Kyle Ooms (Hollandale, MN/Albert Lea High School) (16), and Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) (13) led for the visiting squad. Kyle Ooms (Hollandale, MN/Albert Lea High School) had a career best 16 rebounds, just a week after the senior was recognized for reaching the 500 rebound milestone. Tonight recorded his sixth double-double this season.

Northwestern will travel to St. Bonifacius tomorrow afternoon for a game against Crown College with a tip-off time of 3 p.m. The Eagles will have a week to prepare for the face-off at North Central University next Saturday afternoon.
