ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's basketball game with the University of Wisconsin-Superior lived up to its hype, as the two teams battled for 40 minutes inside the Ericksen Center Saturday. The Eagles came up just short, falling to the visiting Yellowjackets (13-2, 7-0) 60-50 in a battle of the top two teams in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). UNW falls to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in league play.
After an evenly played first half, in which UWS led by one (27-26) heading into the locker room, a five-point third quarter – the Eagles' lowest of the season – distanced the Yellowjackets' lead (39-31) heading into the final frame. UNW kept clawing, pulling within seven on several occasions, but a pair of UWS free-throws with 28 seconds remaining put the game away.
UNW had a very balanced scoring attack for the second straight night, as
Regan Cooper (Pella, Iowa/Pella) led the way with 12 points, while
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield),
Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) and
Jessica Cole (Altoona, Iowa/Southeast Polk) all contributed eight points. Cooper also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Berglund continues to be dominant on the defensive end of the court, as the sophomore tallied seven steals to move her season count to 68.
Both teams shot 37 percent from the floor, while UNW held a 19-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Eagles will remain at home next weekend, hosting Finlandia (Friday) and Northland (Saturday). Saturday's contest with Northland will be Hoops Hysteria on campus. Fans can find more information on next weekend's happenings at
