ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern football team will ride a two-game winning streak into Saturday's contest at Martin Luther. The Eagles are 2-1, 2-0 UMAC, while the Knights are 1-2, 0-2 UMAC. Kickoff in New Ulm is slated for 1 p.m.
What You Need to KnowThe Eagles will look to protect their perfect conference record after defeating Minnesota Morris 27-0 last Saturday to push their league mark to 2-0. UNW defeated Martin Luther, 41-27, in a high-scoring affair last year in St. Paul. The Knights last defeated UNW in 2009, when MLC came away with a 9-7 win in New Ulm.
Scouting the KnightsAfter opening the season with a 35-0 win over Maranatha Baptist, the Knights have dropped their last two games. Most recently, Martin Luther fell in a shootout with Crown last Saturday, 43-33. The two teams racked up more than 900 yards of total offense. Tim Keller leads the ground attack for the Knights, as he has rushed for 295 yards on 59 carries. Matt Olson has thrown for 523 yards and five touchdowns. Ben Ewings has recorded 18 tackles to lead the defensive charge.Dominant DefenseThe UNW defense continues to be dominant, as the Eagles shutout the host Cougars last week, allowing just 128 yards of total offense and forcing five Morris turnovers. The Eagles are giving up an average of just 222 yards per game.
Freshman PhenomsUNW scored three touchdowns on Saturday – all three were scored by freshmen.
BJ Foster (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) put the Eagles on the board in the first quarter and
Jordan Joseph (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael Albertville) added two second half touchdown runs to lead the Northwestern offense. The scores were the first career touchdowns for both Foster and Joseph.
Brilliant BenSophomore placekicker was perfect Saturday in Morris, converting on two field goal attempts (42 yards & 33 yards), while going 3-for-3 on PAT's. For his efforts against the Cougars, Lyons was named the UMAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
