ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team (2-2) used a trio of first half goals to defeat visiting Bethany Lutheran (2-3-1) 4-1 Monday night at Reynolds Field.
The Eagles didn't waste any time getting on the board, as
Katie Meinke (Victoria, Minn./Southwest Christian) scored on a pass from
Jordan Skarin (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) just over 13 minutes into the game. Less than four minutes later
Brynn Denniston (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) scored her first-career goal to push the UNW lead to 2-0. Denniston wasn't done, as the Hartland, Wis., native scored again midway through the first half to give the Eagles a 3-0 cushion. Both of Denniston's goals were unassisted.
The Vikings trimmed Northwestern's lead to 3-1 in the 33', as Ali Mix scored unassisted.
After neither team could generate any offense through much of the second half,
Jordan Skarin (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) scored her first goal of the season on a breakaway to extend the UNW lead to 4-1.
The Eagles offense was dominant, as UNW held a 27-8 advantage in the shots category.
Josie Monson (Albertville, Minn./Homeschool) grabbed four saves in goal.
The Eagles will be back in action Tuesday night when North Central travels to Reynolds Field for a 7:15 p.m. contest.
Note: Monday's game was played as a non-conference game even though both schools are members of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC).
