MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team is on to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship match with a 6-3 semifinal victory over Bethany Lutheran College at the Baseline Tennis Center on Friday evening. The Eagles, who split their two regular season contests with the Vikings, swept doubles play to help build an early 3-0 lead that never broke.
Match ResultsTwo of the three doubles matches went 8-5 in favor of UNW, with the Eagles' No. 1 pair of
CJ Lloyd (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and
Brett Jacobus (Lakeville, Minn. /Lakeville North) winning their match 8-3. Lloyd continued his momentum in a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Jacob Kubler at No. 1 while, while Jacobus was a 6-2, 6-1 winner against No. 2 singles opponent Andrew Jelkin.
Trevor Grasto (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) used a nice comeback to earn Northwestern's sixth point of the night in a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (12-10) finish at No. 3 singles against Bethany Lutheran's Brent Heflin.
Northwestern's No. 4 singles player, Josh Kimball, suffered a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to the Vikings' Carter Dahl, while
Tanner Magruder (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) lost to Troy Hoyord 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. UNW's
Turner Main (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) was swept in his No. 6 singles match.
Northwestern advances to face the College of St. Scholastica at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Saturday to determine the league's tournament champion. The Saints won both regular season contests against the Eagles en route to a UMAC championship, will be the favorites in the match, which will again be at Baseline on the University of Minnesota campus.
