NEW ULM, Minn. – A rough defensive showing for the University of Northwestern left the Eagles with a 4-0 loss to Martin Luther College on Friday. Four UNW errors led to four unearned runs, spoiling another
Connor Olson (Mahtomedi, Minn/Mahtomedi) gem on the mound that saw the senior strike out five batters over eight innings of work.
Most of Martin Luther's damage was done right away in the bottom of the first inning, a frame that saw UNW commit a pair of defensive mistakes. Three hits, combined with those errors, led to the Knights owning a 3-0 lead after a mere 20 minutes of action on a clear, 40-degree afternoon.
Matt Olson, the Martin Luther sophomore who roughed up Northwestern's
Connor Olson (Mahtomedi, Minn/Mahtomedi) with three stolen bases on the day, added an insurance run for the Knights in the fifth as he took advantage of another UNW error, this time on a botched infield throw. Olson stole third base, and then scored on MLC's next at-bat by Jason Lindemann.
Northwestern threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Knights pitcher Jonathan Kock worked out of jams after the Eagles started both frames with a pair of leadoff hits. As a team, UNW collected seven hits on the day, two shy of Martin Luther's nine.
Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ), who played a full game for the first time since suffering an injury during the team's spring break trip in Florida, was one of two Eagles to get two hits, joining freshman
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin).
Olson went eight innings on the mound for Northwestern for the second straight game. Despite suffering his fourth consecutive loss, the senior bumped his season earned run average down to 3.52, which is second-best on the Eagles roster. From the batter's box, UNW has given Olson a combined two runs in his last three outings.
The game was Martin Luther's first on its new on-campus field. The Knights were also playing without everyday center fielder and leadoff hitter Luke Rothe, who suffered a significant head injury in MLC's Thursday afternoon game at Bethany Lutheran, a note that was released by the college late Thursday night.
The same two teams will be back in action on Saturday to wrap up the three-game series with the first pitch scheduled for 12 noon.
