NEW ULM, Minn. – A few days after winning its first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship outright, the University of Northwestern earned another program first on Tuesday as the Eagles swept their league schedule with a 5-0 victory over Martin Luther College. Rain delayed and eventually halted four of the six singles matches, but UNW picked up the necessary five points to win the match.
Match ResultsUNW won all three doubles matches handily, with both the Nos. 1 and 3 pairs earning 8-1 victories over their Knights counterparts. The same momentum continued into singles play, where
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) yielded combined one game in the only two singles bouts that were able to finish. Johnson was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Martin Luther's Rachel Riedigger at No. 1 singles to improve her combined career wins mark to 134. Nearby, Moe was busy dismantling Carissa Kock in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep to extend her Northwestern-record single season singles wins mark to 24.
Birdie Bardwell (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville),
Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake),
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen), and
Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing)'s Nos. 3-6 singles contests went unfinished.
Now 16-8 overall (8-0 UMAC), UNW is the top seed in this weekend's UMAC postseason tournament at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. The Eagles will face fourth-seeded Bethany Lutheran College in their Friday semifinal match at approximately 8:30 p.m.
