ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern had its opportunities to score, but couldn't bring any runs across home plate in a 2-0 nonconference loss to Augsburg College on Thursday night. UNW threatened with the bases loaded in the first inning and runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth, but the Auggies left Reynolds Field unscathed.
Augsburg's runs came in the first and eighth frames. Andrew Julkowski's double started the momentum for the Auggies in the first, scoring Billy Brookshaw from first. Then in the eighth, Jack Duffy scored from third after hitting a triple off of UNW pitcher
Matt Doss (Pillager, Minn./Pillager).
Doss was one of five hurlers to throw for Northwestern, while Augsburg countered with six pitchers in the nine-inning game as both head coaches prepared for their respective conference games this weekend. Despite going three innings – longer than any of the other UNW pitchers –
Erik Nyquist (Elk River, Minn./Pine Island) was credited with the loss in a three-hit, two-strikeout outing.
As a team, the Eagles were out-hit by a slim 8-7 margin. UNW's two defensive errors didn't end up hurting in the runs column.
Now 16-14 overall, Northwestern heads north on Friday to begin a three-game series against Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) foe College of St. Scholastica at Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minn. The Saints and Eagles are currently 1-2 in the league standings. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. before Saturday's 12 noon twin bill.
