LAKEVILLE, Minn. – For the second straight night, the University of Northwestern women's tennis team earned a 9-0 nonconference victory at Lifetime Fitness, this time over Saint Mary's University. The win was the Eagles' fifth straight and continued to give UNW momentum heading into two big matches later this week. Northwestern hasn't yielded a point to an opponent since April 11.
Match ResultsNorthwestern took all three doubles matches, but it was the Eagles' No. 3 pair of
Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Birdie Bardwell (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) who had the best success against their opponents, Ashley Syed and Sheyenne Bauer, in an 8-1 win. UNW's Nos. 1 and 2 doubles teams won their matches in 8-3 and 8-4 scores.
Bardwell was the only Eagle to face stiff competition in her No. 3 singles battle. The freshman overcame a 7-5 first set loss, rebounding with a 6-4 second set before taking the third set tiebreaker 10-3. Four of Northwestern's six singles wins came with two or less games lost in each of the two-set matches.
The victory bumps UNW to 13-8 on the year. Northwestern will get a day of practice in on Wednesday before hosting Judson University in a National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) regional championship match on Thursday at 12 noon, with the winner of that bout heading to Mobile, Ala. in early May for the NCCAA National Tournament. The Eagles will then follow that up with a Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) match on Saturday, when a win would give Northwestern the league championship outright.
